The Three Vows of Religion for those living like monks and nuns

The Three Vows of Religion for those living like monks and/or nuns

Poverty: Living simply, without personal possessions, to be freer for service and to focus on spiritual rather than material wealth.

Chastity: A commitment to selfless love, enabling deeper relationships with God and others, free from possessiveness.

Obedience to the Gospel

Living like a monk or nun involves embracing mindfulness, simplicity, discipline, and spiritual devotion through practices like single-tasking, regular meditation, silence, communal prayer/reflection, and focusing on core precepts like compassion and contentment, balancing structured routines (prayer, study, work) with quiet contemplation to cultivate inner peace and purpose. You can adopt these principles by dedicating time to mindfulness, simplifying possessions, serving others, and establishing daily rituals, even without formal ordination

Core Principles & Practices

  • Mindfulness & Single-Tasking: Do one thing at a time with full focus (e.g., just walk, just eat), moving slowly and deliberately.
  • Silence & Solitude: Dedicate daily time for quiet reflection and prayer, allowing space to hear inner thoughts and divine guidance.
  • Discipline & Routine: Structure your day with regular practices like meditation, scripture reading, or chanting, rising early and eating mindfully.
  • Simplicity & Contentment: Reduce possessions, focus on needs, and practice gratitude for what you have.
  • Community & Service: Connect authentically with others, practice humility, and find ways to help, even in small acts.
  • Spiritual Study: Engage in practices like Lectio Divina (divine reading) or meditation to deepen understanding.
How to Start ( at Home)
  1. Start Small: Begin with short, focused sessions (e.g., 10 minutes of mindful breathing) and gradually increase.
  2. Create Rituals: Develop simple, daily habits like mindful mornings, quiet reflection time, or dedicated periods for study.
  3. Practice "Monastic" Habits: Eat slowly, focus on one task at a time, and create a peaceful environment.
  4. Seek Guidance: Consider finding a spiritual director or joining a community (like Plum Village or local monasteries) for support.
  5. Live Your Vows (Metaphorically): Practice vows of humility, simplicity (poverty), chastity (moderation), and obedience (to your chosen path).
By integrating these elements, you can cultivate a more deliberate, peaceful, and purposeful life, drawing from monastic traditions across faiths.
